Top 10 Fail-proof ways to make money with drone photography

Madison Sate Capital Wisconsin Drone Photo

Making money as a new photographer can be a tough challenge. I know because I struggled with making any money for the first year in business.

I have personally made up to 400$ per hour doing drone photography.

Read this blog to learn from my mistakes and make some money for yourself.

Here is the review of the drone I recommend for professional photography – The Mavic 2 Pro

1. Real Estate Photography

Kim Colby Homes 2552 Midway Dr. Stoughton Wisconsin

The Number one place drone photographers go to make some money is the real estate niche.

Realtors and brokers need professionally edited high quality drone photos to drastically increase the chances to sell a house.

I only recommended doing drone photography for middle class, high end. and commercial properties. The lower end houses just don’t need professional drone photos.

One really cool thing about being a drone photographer is you are more then likely going to be the only one at the property. This means you get to work in peace most of the time.

The downfall with real estate photography is most agents only sell low end homes and there is really high competition for the agents that use it. Some of them have a photographer already and some of them took the time to get licensed and do it themselves.

2. Construction Drone Photography

Commercial drone photography Wisconsin Beloit college powerhouse construction

There are construction projects going on all around you all the time. In my own city ther are about 10 projects happening all right now.

Construction projects are great because they are long term and need progress update photos of there projects.

I worked for almost 2 years with the Economic Development for my city. The constantly needed drone shot of the big projects happening around the city.

The really cool thing about these projects is you can test out your skills without being hired. Go to a project (do not park/stand/or land on the property), fly nearby it carefully, take your photos, and upload them to social media. I had a couple of projects where I took photos and got paid afterwards when the company seen the photos I took on social media.

3. Teach people drone photography

keyboard black keys white letters that says teach

One way you can make money is by teaching people how to fly a drone.

You can set up a class and teach a lot of people about what you do or how to do it.

Personal lessons can also make you $100-$200 per hour teaching someone one on one the basics or your tips and tricks.

4. Wedding Photography

Appleton Wisconsin wedding photo on lake

Weddings do hire drone photographers now!!!

They want to capture there event in every way possible and hire drone photographer or videographers all the time.

I was hired to do a video for my very first wedding and offered them some drone video as a bonus.

5. Marketing for businesses

Milwaukee Art Museum Milwaukee Wisconsin drone photo beautiful colorful sky

Businesses are constantly in need of marketing material to promote their business.

Drone photography is perfect for a lot of businesses. You can sell local shops nice drone photos of the downtown or sell bigger businesses photos of their own building.

Get creative and think outside the box.

6. Sell stock photos

Stock photos text over miller park Milwaukee Wisconsin drone photo

Selling your photos on stock photography websites can help bring in some extra money. Stock photos are photos businesses can purchase to use for marketing, ads, blogs, emails, etc…

  • Shutterstock is one of the best stock photography sites out there.
  • Adobe Stock is another great site to sell photos on
  • One of my favorite stock photography websites Pexels

7. PRIVATE INVESTIGATION and servaliance

Private investigators need drone operators to get to places they are not legally aloud to go but a drone can legally go. It also provides a lot more coverage compared to walking a wooded area for example.

Some police and fire rescue companies started using drones to help find criminals, lost people, and injured people. This has saved a ton of lives already. Check to see how you can get in on helping the fire or police department with this kind of work.

8. Tourism and Restaurant Industry

The tourism industry is constantly marketing the businesses to bring in travel.

Try providing hotels, restaurants, golf courses, local museums, historical properties, tourist attractions, and the city’s convention center.

All of these are great places to have drone photos of their properties.

9. selling presets

Lightroom presets are a quick way to edit a certain style or look onto your photos.

You can easily create these presets and sell them on a site like Sellfy

Here are my FREE Lightroom presets

10. STart a youtube Channel or blog

YouTube channels and blogs are a great way to attract more clients, brand deals, sponsorships, and money from advertising.

Review drone products, provide helpful tips, create tutorials, cover new topics in the niche.

Here’s a helpful tip, when you talk about a product make sure you add an affiliate link so people can purchase the products you recommend. This is a great way to make some extra money off of the helpful advice you put out for free.

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom are two amazing professional quality drones on the market. Here’s 10 must-have accessories for the Mavic 2 series that will enhance your experience.

Here is my review on the DJI Mavic 2 Pro

1. DJI Smart Controller

The DJI Smart Controller has a built in 5.5in 1080p screen with an ultra bright display so you can operate your drone in bright sunlight. The screen is about two times as bright as a standard phone screen. The Controller offers a Full HD video view transmission from the drone up to 10km (about .6 miles) away. It can easily be tucked away making it convenient for travel. The Smart controller also handles weather really well from -4°F to 104°F or -20°C to 40°C. The DJI Smart Controller has a DJI Go Share app to easily transfer your photos to your phone. The battery life is approx. two and a half hours long. The Controller even has a built in microphone and speaker so you can livestream your flights.

2. Mavic 2 pro and zoom Batteries

The Mavic Series Battery lasts about 20 to 30 min per battery. The drone only comes with one battery and that wont last you very long. I highly recommend purchasing a couple spare batteries you will thank my later. I personally have five of them and use all five when shooting for a couple projects in a day.

3. Mavic 2 series Car Charger

Since you already know the batteries do not last very long get yourself one of these handy car chargers. It can charge your batteries while you are traveling to your location. This is also great if you forget to charge your batteries ahead of time.

4. Mavic 2 waterproof Carying Case

This Mavic 2 Waterproof Hard Cover Case is perfect for protecting your drone during travel, on the jobsite, or if you forget the case on the back of your car and drive off with it flying into the road (talking from experience). My drone was returned to me safely undamaged.

5. ND Filters for MAVIC 2

Mavic 2 pro ND filters are perfect for preventing light from entering the camera. This allows you to have more control over the shutter speed and aperture settings. Simpler terms they are like sunglasses for your drone.

6. Mavic 2 Extended Landing Gear

Extended Landing Gear is amazing if you need to take off in a snowy, rocky, or grassy area. They attach to your drones arms to raise the drone up further off the ground. If you try to take off in a rocky area you will see the propellers will hit the rocks or grass if you do not have the extensions.

7. LOW NOISE Propellers for MAVIC 2

Low Noise Propellers are great for reducing the noise of your drone and do not cost you an arm and a leg.

8. Landing Pad For MAVIC 2 Pro and zoom

This inexpensive item will allow you to take off without stirring up a lot of dust and will give you a flat surface to take of on. I personally like the square landing pad more than the circle one since it is so much easier to put away and store.

9. DJI Care Refresh For MAVIC 2

DJI Care Refresh is a protection plan that offers accidental damage coverage for your DJI Mavic 2 drone. DJI Care Refresh (one year plan) includes up to two replacements in the first year. DJI Care Refresh (two year plan) includes up to three replacements in two years and extends the warranty up to two years from the date of your purchase.

10. Lume Cube Lighting Kit for Mavic 2

Light Cubes for your Mavic 2 Pro or Mavic 2 Zoom are great for light painting photography and night time flying. These lights are lightweight, durable, with up to one and a half hours of flight time. 360° rotation will allow you to adjust the lights in any direction.

Bonus Accessory – DJI Mavic 2 Battery Charging Hub

This is one of the coolest accessories I own for my Mavic 2 Pro. It can charge three batteries, your phone, and the remote controller all at the same time. The original charger sold with the drone comes with the ability to charge four batteries but only one of them at a time. This charger drastically reduces the weight time for a full charge on all batteries!!!

NEW DRONE REVIEW: DJI Mavic 2 Pro with the Hasselblad L1D-20c Camera

I recommend this bundle for a few different reasons. First reason, Each battery lasts about 20-28 min, and this bundle comes with two extra batteries giving you three total, which is about 1h to 1.5hrs of flight time. The second reason, it comes with a ton of really important accessories like the car charger good for long trips, extra propellers, lens filters (ND 4, 8, 16, and CPL), a cleaning cloth, landing gear extension for tall grass, landing/takeoff pad, antenna reflectors to help boost the signal, 128GB SD Card, USB SD card reader to transfer photos and video, and a waterproof hard carrying case. I personally own all of these items and purchased all of them separately, which obviously cost me a bit extra. I do use all of these items when I need to.

  • Hasselblad Camera

The Hasselblad camera is a very high-quality drone camera with 20 MP and a 1-inch CMOS Sensor. Much bigger and higher quality than the Mavic Pro. It uses Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology to provide extremely accurate colors for your photos and videos.

  • 10-bit Dlog-M Color Profile

The Mavic Pro 2 is equipped with a 10-bit Dlog-M color profile that provides a high dynamic range for more control over the colors when editing. It records over  1 billion colors compared to the traditional 8-bit’s 16 million colors. Not only that it captures more details in the shadows and highlights, this is great if you are shooting in sunrise and sunset settings.

  • HDR Video

Most drones offer 1080p video, which is okay for most people. The Mavic 2 Pro offers 4K with up to 10-bit HDR VideFo. The Mavic Pro 2 can be plugged into a 4K TV that will properly playback the video with very accurate colors! Most people prefer HDR due to the brighter highlights and increased contrast that really make the video POP!

  • Adjustable Aperture

The Mavic 2 Pro has an Aperture range from f/2.8 to f/11. For low light shooting, change the aperture closer to f/2.8. For well-lit environments, set the aperture closer to f/11.

  • Professional Quality

With 4k Video, HDR, 1in sensor, and 20mp Raw photo, the quality is plenty enough to create stunning photos and beautiful videos. This is a great drone for professional photographers and offers more features than you will end up using.

Here is a photo I captured with the Mavic 2 Pro and Professionally Edited

Art Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing

The obstacle avoidance will save your drone’s life when you are not paying attention or even if you accidentally misjudge the distance of a tree or building. After owning the drone for over two years I have only crashed it once into a tree. The obstacle avoidance is not perfect and struggles to detect small branches.

  • Return to Home

The return to home feature is awesome!!! It brings the drone back to the starting point when you press the home button, or than the drone’s battery is getting too low to continue flying. This helps prevent you from falling out of the sky with a dead battery.

  • 360 Photography

The Mavic 2 Pro creates beautiful 360 photos and stitches them together in the app, allowing you to capture big areas all around you and a cool new perspective. You can upload these photos to your Facebook page and Google My Business listing.

Here is a photo I took and uploaded to my Business Listing.

  • Hyper-lapse Photography

Create Really cool time-lapse/hyper-lapse photography.

Here is My Hyper-lapse video of the Milwaukee Skyline in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

  • HDR and AEB Photography

HDR (High Dynamic Range) produces a greater range of luminosity than what is typically possible with standard imagery creating a higher quality image. AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) takes photos at multiple exposures and merges them together for a more evenly lit photo. This is especially good for low light conditions (sunrise and sunset) and bright conditions like middle-of-the-day shooting.

  • Panoramas

The Mavic 2 Pro comes with several different panorama options, Sphere which is the 360 panoramas, 180° panoramas, Vertical panoramas for tall structures, and Horizontal panoramas for wide areas where you just don’t have enough room to capture the whole subject.

  • Stabilization

The drone is extremely stable and can handle pretty strong winds, rain, and snow. I recommend being extremely cautious and careful about flying in dangerous weather. Just because it can handle the weather does not mean you should be flying it. Also, in stronger winds, the drone will compensate for the wind by tilting slightly, causing the horizon axis to be off. This can be corrected in post-production.

  • 31-min max. flight time

The flight time on this drone is approx 20 to 28 min from my experience. This is pretty low for a high-end drone and could be approved upon. I definitely recommend having multiple batteries and a car charger for on-the-go. I personally have five batteries, so I can manage multiple drone jobs in one day without running out of battery.

  • Does not zoom

The Mavic 2 Zoom was not as high of a quality drone but did have a cool zoom feature which they did not include in the Pro version.

  • More expensive

The higher quality drone with amazing features does come at a heavier price tag. I personally feel like the drone is well worth the price.

  • Occasionally has system problems.

I have had a couple of faulty drones in my two years of flying the Mavic 2 Pro. It has never malfunctioned during use, only before I go to take off or after a system update. This was an inconvenience but not dangerous. I recommend getting insurance with the purchase in case anything happens that is not your fault, than they will cover the cost of a replacement for you. Since it’s an expensive piece of equipment, it is a good idea to insure it anyway.

In conclusion, I recommend this drone and personally use it on a daily basis. The drone has insanely good quality, great features, and is super easy to operate. Make sure you purchase drone insurance with your purchase and extra batteries you will thank me later on.

I recommend this drone to a professional photographer, videographer, YouTuber, and vloggers. Do not forget to follow your state and federal UAV/Drone laws for hobbyists and professionals.

Since the dawn of photography, photographers are restricted by exactly what they truly are capable of. Sometimes, photographers have fought with getting the most essential minutes as friends and family keep getting in the photo. When they were lucky, with some planning, they caught a good photo.

Further along in history, people started to take photos from airplanes and helicopters. Though this tech enhanced the capabilities of just exactly what exactly a photographer managed to accomplish, these certainly were very limiting: nobody would definitely be flying a helicopter 40 feet above a marriage service to catch an image, it might cost way too much and start to become considered a huge safety concern.

Now, though, because of the availability, cost, and simplicity of usage that drones provide, it is now reasonable to fly within a meeting that not long ago was nearly impossible. What exactly does this mean for the ordinary individual? Special events will be documented with the assistance of all drones; videos of festivals, weddings, and so on will contain an increasing number of shots out of the skies since drones continue to grow in popularity.
